The AlvegoRoot 10 Minute Play Festival Application

Application Due Date: October 27th at 11:59 PM

AlvegoRoot Theatre is accepting submissions for the second installment of our 10 Minute Play Festival happening February 27th - March 1st at The Manor Park Memorial Hall in London, Ontario. There is no entry fee. Each group is guaranteed $100 (it will be profit share after expenses and if the total comes out to less than $100, AlvegoRoot will top up to $100 per group - groups made significantly more in 2024).

Were you part of the festival in 2024? New this year:
    • We will provide a list of set pieces you can use ahead of time that will be incorporated into the design (so that you can leave the big furniture at home)
    • Awards by adjudication (TBD)
    • We are adding an invited dress performance to give participating artists a chance to see each other’s works
    • Group dinner between shows on Saturday February 28th

This is a curated festival, and you will be notified if your play has been selected within one week of the application closing date.

    Accessibility:
THE HALL IS FULLY ACCESSIBLE by elevator with an accessible washroom. There are several bus routes that can drop you off a block from the hall on Wharncliffe. We will store any bicycles safely indoors.

    Submission:
In your submission, at the minimum you must include a working title and description of the project you are hoping to present. Optionally, you can also include either a script sample or a full draft. You are also welcome to submit an example of your writing from a previous play.

What you need to bring/what is provided:
This is a 10-minute play festival, but with the added perk of free dramaturgy by artistic director and professional dramaturg, Adam Corrigan Holowitz. The festival will present fully-rehearsed productions, it is not a play reading. With the support of AlvegoRoot, your job is to assemble your team and rehearse the play.

There is no theme for the festival, but there are a few rules and guidelines:
    • We are looking to showcase playwrights from London and the surrounding region (we are not providing billeting)
    • Cast sizes can range from 1 to 3 actors (casts cannot exceed three actors)
    • Few, if any, scene changes are encouraged
    • Minimal props encouraged
    • You have 1 minute to set the stage and 1 minute to strike the stage - set pieces need to be returned to neutral (or possibly transitioned for the next group) and you will need to be able to bring on/take off all of your props in one exit. THIS IS THE CARDINAL RULE. Please respect it, and think minimally. You cannot bring any large set pieces; we will include base set pieces. An artistic scenography will be developed which supports all the plays. This will be rehearsed.

    What we will provide:
    • Dramaturgy
    • Basic Lighting and Sound Operations
    • Collaboration on building a simple sound design for your play
    • Each show will receive a percentage of the box office with a guaranteed $100 per group.
    • The venue (11 Briscoe Street West, London Ontario)
    • Rehearsal space (you get 1 hour in the space early february, as well as tech and dress rehearsals)
    • Assisting with casting and finding a director for your play, if requested.
    • Access to AlvegoRoot’s costume and props collection.
    • Set pieces.

    You will be responsible for:
    • Finding rehearsal space for the majority of your rehearsal process.
    • Organizing and rehearsing the play.
    • Casting your play, finding a director (you can act in/direct your own play)
    • Provide a list of simple sound and light cues.
    • Costuming and finding props for your play.
    • Providing script drafts for dramaturgical feedback.
    • Providing updates on play development and rehearsal process.

Why are we doing this? AlvegoRoot Theatre is a new play development company and London doesn’t have many paid opportunities for playwrights to develop their craft unless they do all of the work themselves. From workshops AlvegoRoot has facilitated, several monodramas/short plays have been further developed into full plays. While we don’t guarantee further production support, a short play is a great way to build upon an idea.
